Of all the different techniques to learn multiplication facts, memorizing skip counting songs is the easiest method I’ve found.

So, ditch those boring flashcards and liven up your homeschool day with these engaging skip counting songs.

I’ve included videos of the free skip counting songs we use at the end of this post. But first, let’s talk a little about how skip counting works.

Memorize Multiplication Facts Easily With Skip Counting Songs

What Is Skip Counting?

Skip counting is a mathematical technique where the same number is added over and over again.  To skip count, simply count forward by any number other than 1.  For instance, skip counting by 2 would be 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20. You add 2 more each time.

Skip counting is basically reciting multiples, which are the answers to multiplication problems.

We skip count quite often in everyday life.  For example, when we count nickels and dimes, we’re skip counting by 5 and 10.

Why is Skip Counting Easier?

Skip counting is a simplified approach to learning multiplication facts.  Instead of memorizing all the facts, you’re just learning the answers in order.

How Do You Teach Skip Counting?

A multi-sensory teaching approach is the most effective for quick memorization of multiplication facts.

If you have an auditory learner, the songs might be enough, but visual learners will benefit from a reference they can see.  These skip counting cards are a great visual aid for children that are still learning multiplication facts.

The key to committing them to memory is repetition. I like to play them in the car while we’re out running errands. You’ll be sick of hearing them, but your children will know them by heart.

Once they have listened to the songs enough times, test their knowledge. Ask your children to sing them for you. Engaging in activity while having children recite the songs is helpful.

Try practicing skip counting songs while jumping on a trampoline or jumping rope.  Or you can use sidewalk chalk to have them write the multiples on the driveway and have them jump from number to number.

How Do You Solve Multiplication Problems with Skip Counting?

You solve multiplication problems with skip counting using your fingers. For example, if the problem is 6 x 4, skip count by 6s, using 4 fingers.

As an added benefit, knowing the multiples will come in handy when your children take higher-level math courses.
